Over twenty years ago, my dad helped me make a pinewood derby car. It quickly became one of my favorite toys, and I still have it today! It's definitely taken a beating over the years, since it went to college with me and (somehow) survived getting boxed up and moved several times. I decided, half for posterity's sake and half for the intriguing challenge, to 3D model my beloved little toy car.
Note: This is a very challenging print. There's not really a good orientation for it, since the only support-free orientation also has a laughably tiny contact surface. You'll probably need to use supports, you'll definitely have to do cleanup work, and you might end up with some rough texturing on the fins like I did. Make sure you have your printer dialed in and are using good quality filament since this print is particularly sensitive to issues.
Printing recommendations
- Supports and brim on
- If printing with the rear of the car against the print bed, definitely use a wide brim
(I should probably also add a disclaimer that this won't be allowed in most pinewood derbies for fairly obvious reasons.)
